Engineering Skills Week
We run a series of Engineering Skills Weeks at our Apprentice Training Centre in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, in association with our local schools. Skills Weeks are aimed at pupils in Year 10, especially those who are considering Engineering as a future career.
In February we had 17 pupils from various schools working with our Apprentices, and their challenge was to build a working model of a Trebuchet and on the last day they got to try them out against each other!

Want to find out what it's like working for us?During the week you'll have the opportunity to work alongside our current apprentices, and build a machine from scratch, following engineering drawings and using a variety of hand tools as well as manual milling and turning equipment.
You'll also get to see around our site and find out about our company and what we do. |
Who can apply ?Our Skills Weeks are open to local pupils in year 10, especially those considering Design Technology or other Engineering-related subjects at GCSE level.
There's no charge for taking part in the event and we provide all necessary materials, safety equipment, training and supervision - but you do need to be prepared to give up your half term, and since our Training Centre is part of a working factory you need to understand and follow appropriate Health and Safety rules. …and bring your own lunch! There's a certificate for those that participate - a useful addition to your CV. |
What do we get out of it?Well, we're keen to encourage local young people to consider a career in engineering. As a major employer in the Chesham area we need a highly skilled workforce to maintain our position as the world leader in our field.
That's why we set up our own in-house Apprenticeship Scheme to take on and train youngsters with an interest in engineering to become part of our expanding business . The skills week lets us show people what working with Silverson might be like - and it gives us the opportunity of spotting talented people who might have a future with us... |
